CHURCH'S PROTEST
PERSECTJTION IN EUROPE LONDON, March 24. Greek Catholics in Ruthenia had" been violently and bitterly persecuted in the past year, said Cardinal Griffin at a Mass of intercession in Westminster Cathedral for persecuted Catholics in Eastern Europe. The entire episcopate of seven bishops had been arrested, he said. Three had died and the remainder were still imprisoned. A very large number of priests had been arrested, imprisoned, or deported, and many had been murdered. The rest of the clergy* had been placed in a condition whereby they were unable to exercise their ministry to the church in Yugoslavia and b&d also been subjected to. persecntion, Bishops, priests and lay people had heen imprisoned and many murderejd, and Catholic schools and church property .confiscated. m many other regions now Within the Russian zone, said Cardinal Griffin,. priests and the faithful were heing subjected to the tyranny of se.crel police, and thousands were fleeing from their persecutors. "We invite all who would proclaim the sacred rights of man to join us in protesting against the brutal treat ment meted out .to those who fought that men might be;free," he said.
