LABOUR CONFERENCE

The fight hetween. .Cpmmunists ana Labour Party supporters for control of the annual conferencs of the Labour ; Party at B.ournemouth in June is grpwing in intensity. Supporters of the Conmiunist Party 's application for affiliation in the Labour Party in Britain have grown to vast numhers. When ; the Communists sought affiliation thr ea years ago, they were defeated 1,900,000 votes to 700,000. Now at least five powerful unions are preparing to throw in a bloc of votes totalling nearly 1,000, 000 m support of affiliation. They are the Nationai IJnion of Distributive and Al- ; lied Workers, the Electrical Trade? Union, the Amalgamated Eng'ineering Dnion, the Nationai Union of Mineworkers ahd the Na-tional Union of Railwaym,en. Ran'ged against them are the Municipal and General Workers' Dnion and the Transport and General Workers' Union. Labour leaders in the Government are known to he extremely worried at the prospect of a possihLe Communist majority. They believe that such a olow would put the Labour Party back 20 vears and lead to its defeat at the next general electiops.
