MAORI' POLITICAL PARTY PLANNED
— NEW PLYMOUTH, March 25. The initial steps towards the forrnntion of a Maori Party, 'with the ohjeci of contes'iing the Native clectorates at the forthcoming election, were taken at a meeting at New Plymouth at wliich 20 delegates, represeuting all the major tiibes in the D.pminion, were present. Subsequentlv tbe following official statement was issue'd : "An impromptu meeting of representatives of the -Maoii raee concei'ning the coming election was held at New Plymouth on Marcli 23, the object' being to discuss ways and means whereb'y the rights and privlieges of the Maori people, as enlbodied in the Treaty of Waitangi, which has lain dormant since its ineeption of February 6, 1840, mav be safeguarded. The soejalistie ideas of the Maori race were also discussed, It being found that the traditions . and creed highly honoured and uplield by our forebcars had been demoralised." After a lengthv discussion a resolu: tion was submitted "upon the formatioii of a new party entitled "The Maori j Party." This resolu tion will be submitI tetf to all tvibes throughout New Zea1 land, - .
