BOS MURPHY'S SUCCESS

WELTER TITLE LIFTED WELLINGTON, March 24. Eos Murphy (Hutt Valley) lil'ted the welterweight title from Vic Caltaux (Auckland) before a crowd of 7000 on Saturday afternoon, the police stopping the fight in the 12th of a scheduled 15round fight, when Caltaux was practically out on his feet. It was one of the greatest open-air bouts -since the days of Sarron and Donovan. Murphy gained enormousiy in prestige for his coming fight v/ith Vic Patrick, the Australian lightweight welterweight champion, by the manner in which he battered Caltaux into submission, the latter being a gory spectacle as he left the ring. Only superb courage enab.ed hini to take the tremendous punishment he received. The only puysical evidence Murphy bore of the efiects of the fight was a cut ovei an cye received when he was accidentally butted in the head by Caltaux during a clinch.
