WELLINGTON WINS TOSS
POOR START AGAINST THE AUSTRALIAN-S WELLINGTON, March 22. Lamason ro-day gave We-llingion an encouraging start against the Australian cncketers by winning the toss. The initial batsmen failed to take advantage of an easy wicket, Rlce, who opened with Tin-dul, -anu Ongley being back in the payilion 15 minutes after the start of play. Toshak claimed both the wicxexs, bowiing Rice .round his legs and having Ongley caught ,by Poofand torward of square leg. The catch was a splendid- effort from a fullblooded hook off the second ball Ongley faced. • Miller, who .opened rhe bowiing with Toshak, caused the batsmen more trouble, one or two snicks going periiously cfose to the slip fieidsmen. With the total at 22, extras were responsibie for 14, the ball rising sharply at the southern end. Tallon was uncertain behind the wickefs. Playing confidentjy, Tdndill glided ToshaK to leg for two braces and oh' the bowler's sixth over for three. Though the balls flew ofl the bat f ast enough, an extremely slow outfield prevented any boundaries. Tindill had been content to score oenind the wicket, but when at- , tempting to push one from Miller J to mid-off, mistimed and was ! caught by Miller following up. Tin- ! dill had been at the wickets 37 minutes for his eight runs. Though numerous deliveries hit the batsmen on the pads, therc were few appeals. However, when tney did corrie the large crowd that riixged the Basin barracked the I bowler. Crawford and Rowe did not overwork the fieidsmen, and though | there was briiliant sunshine most of the Australians kept their jer!seys on. i 'fhe first boundary came off Mil- ! ler's eighth over, a well-timed hook | by Crawford saiiing over the square leg's head for four. At this stage Miller, whose eight .oveys had cost ! seven runs, was spelled by Johnson. ! The batsmen were more at home ' ( with his oowling, and off his fourth ; over Rowe lifted him ovey ,fhe rpp.es ;for a flne six at square leg. Toshak | | was becoming innocuous, and after I i his twelfth over was relieved by i : Dooland: Toshak had taken two j wickets for 18 runs. Rowe and Crawford seemed set 1 i for a profitable par.tnership, but ih • 1 playing back to an off-spinner from j jonnsOn, Crawford was bowled. I
| The total was 54 for four wickets. j j Lamason was next and immediately j i.began to belabour the bowiing. His"! i recxressness did "no good, however, ! ;and he was caught behind off John- j son arter earlier surviving a chance when Brown dropped one in the j covers.
