DENNY GILLIES Al'ter an association extending over fourteen and a-lialf years with the Palmerston Xorth llospital, iirst as house surgeoil, and for the past eleven and a-hatf years as radiologist, Dr.- E. Denny Gillies is severing her connection with tliat institution on March 31. It is interesting to recall tliat Dr. Gillies graduated M.B., Cli.B., at the Otago University and on qualifying joined the stalf of the Palmerston j Xorth llospital as a house surgeon for! three years. Iveen on the diagnostie aspect of her profession she proceeded ! to England in 1931 for post-graduate J vvork and to study radiology in Londonj and Cambridge where she obtained her 1 D.M., K.E. (C'amb.). She had extensive radiological cxperience in England and in 1934, while she was still away, she was appointed radiologist at the Palmerston Xorth llospital. Growth of Department. As an instance of the enonnous growth of the work in this department it niight be said that in 1934 the nuniber of X-ray exaniinat.ions was 1417, wliile the prcsent number is at the rate of 18,000 per annum. Treatments in 1934 liumbered 119, the present rate being nearly 3000 per annum. Dr. Gillies' staff in 1934 consisted of oue assistant and today coniprises six technicians, four elerlcs, one nurse and a porter. The initial building provided two X-ray rooins, a dark room, eonsulting room and a sliared waiting room. The present department is spacious and can boast of 24 rooms, together with 12 dressing rooins, also additional and up-to-date equipment. Just reeently there has been established a department of clinical photography. Palmerston North Hospital has been f'ortunate indeed in retaining the services of sueh an able radiologist for so liiany year-s and there are many people in the city who have reason to be grateful to Dr. Gillies for kindly thought and consideration inside and outside the scope of her duties. She intended to proceed to England in April but owing to difhculties of travel and eonditions j generally decided to jiostpone this trip j meantime. She will take a weJi-earned | holiday on leaving the hospital and herj many friends in this centre will be glad to learn that she intends to take i up private practice in Palmerston | North. i
