CENTRE SWIMMING

MANAWATU CHAMPIONSHIPS Cold water and chilly air failed to subdue the spirits of the competing swimmers from the Manawatu (Swimmiug Centre's district, representing Dannevirke, Eevin, Feilding, Pahiatua and Palmerston North, in the centre's Anuual Bwimming Ghampionships at the Municipal Swimming Baths lasl evening. Eiglit clubs from within the centre's boundaries wer-e represented. Ln opeuing the championship meetiug, Mr. G. Tremaine, Deputy 'Mayor, said that as far as the weather went it had not been a good swiniming season, bul it had been the ones who had carried on tliroughout the cooler weather who had kept the sport in the forefront. The Palmerston North City Council was alive to the fact that hot water was essential to swiinining, he said, but it had been found impossible to get the hot water from Oook's Mills. Experiments had been recfcntly carried out, however, and it was lioped to have tepid water for the baths by next season. This would prolong the swiniming sea sou and maybe entice soine of the morc timid oues into the water. In conciu-; sion, ^Lr. Tremaine convey-ed the con gratulations of the city to Miss Rodges who had eaptained Ihe North lslaft.l Women 's fSwinimiTig Team at the recent New Zealand Women 's Ghampionships. Following the openiug the events were proceeded with.
