OVER £100 RAISED

CORSO Appeal In Levin SUCCESSFUL STREET DAY In the course of an interviewr with the Mayoress, Mrs. H. B. Burdekin, a representative of "The Chronicle" was advised that the result of the recent CORSO appeal through the combined shop day and street day last Friday had proved very satisfactory. So far the total reached was approximately £120, but there were more donations yet to come in. The successful result of'the effort shqws that the people of Levin have again responded generously to the appeal, and ohviously realise that by helping those unfortunate people in stricken .Europe to obtaih a better way of living, they are also assisting in paving the way tQ peace and prosperity in the world. Starving and distressed people breed anarchy and disease, and until these people in Europe are reasonably happy, and enjoying deeent conditions again, there is no likelihood of the world returning to normality. Although this immediate- appeal is over, funds. are still urgently needed, and 'if any publicspirited citizen cares to forward donations to the Mayoress, she will see that they are forwarded to the CORSO authorities, who will in turn make them available to UNRRA for the relief of distress overseas.

The CORSO Committee is still collecting fat, whjch is rendered down at Carter Bros,' works at thb abattoirs, and sent overseas in drums, and in addition to local contributions from farmers, Carter Bros. themselves donated 500 lbs. of fat, enabling over 1000 lbs. to be sent overseas so far. The committee desires to express its warmest appreciation of the help and generous assistance .received from Messrs. Carter Bros. and Mr. Larsen. The Mayoress also wishes to thank all those citizens who gave so generously of their time. Also "The Chronicle" for publicity, and all the churches, Order of St. John and Red Cross, and women's organisations and the business community, who all contributed to make the appeal so successful.

Lady Galway Guild Mrs. Burdekin also referred to the work of the Lady Galway Guild under the direction of Mrs. C. S. Keedwell, which has carried Qn all through the war in making garments and forwarding them to the poor and needy in Great Britain. This guild meets in the. R.S.A. Rooms every Friday > and invites assistance both from those willing to give their time for sewing, and also for financial donations. Although the food is one big factor in Britain's difficulties to-day, it would seem that clothing is in desperately short supply, as the total number of coupons for a year are nqt sufficient in number to enable one suit to b'e purchased, and the position regarding underclothing is very serious. Any material or used garments that can be donated will be gratefully received. Last year this local brahch of the guild packed and sent to its headquarters in Wellington some 3000 garments for the poor and distresse4 people in Britain.
