SHARP VERBAL EXCHANCE
HOSPITAL BOARD MEETING There was a sliarp exchange of words between Mr. Y. E. Smith (Feilding) and the chairman (Mr. J. A. Nash) at the monthly meeting of the Palmerston Xorth Hospital Board yesterday when the appointment of a niatron for the Awapuni liospital was being discussed. The managing-seeretary (Mr. A. J. Phillipps) reported that two applications had been received for the position, and that the board 's matron (Miss L. M. Banks), the niedical superintendent (Mr. J. 11. North) and himself had consulted on tlie uiatter and made a recomniendation as to which, oue should be accepted. Mr. Phillipps suggested that it wouid be a waste of time to call togetlier the Social Wel t'are (Joinmittee to consider the applications and makc a reconnnendation. "I'm tired of these rocoininendations coniing from headquarters," declared Mr. Bniitli, in moving that the two applications shoukl appear before the appropriatc coinniittee. "1 don't iike these reconiniendations coniing from you, Mr. Phillipps, und 1 might as well toll you so. It looks to me as though everythlng is cut and dried between board meetings. Xot all the past recommendations made bv you to this board liave turued out as rosy as you pictured them. " "1 tliink you are just a bit severe 011 the managing-seeretary," replied Mr. Xash. "Fverything is not cut and dfied. This position at Awapuni has lo be filled and here is a recommendalioti from the matron, the .niedical superintendent and the nianagingsecretary. The board should be prepared to acccpt the reconiniendations if its executive officers, otherwise why to wo liave tliein?" Xo oue spoke in support of Mr. '.Smilh's contentions and his motion lapsed for want of a secouder. A motiou by Mr. '31. F. Perreau that the recommeiidation as made be ac•epted, was secouded by iMrs. M. A. Aitchisou and carried, Mr. Smith recofdiug liis vote against it. Mr. Xash: Tlie resolution has lieeu inoved and secouded by two meinbers of the Bocial Welfare Coinniittee, so there you are.
