Hypnotic-.eyed Dr. lVIarcel Petrot llimped into the packed court-room of the Palaise of Justice between two mobile guardsmen, armed with ! tommy-guns, for the opening of jthe trial in which he is charged with at least twenty-seven murders. Squadrons of elite mobile tguards were stationed at every entrance to the court-room in a aisplay of force not seen since the Laval trial. Petrot smilingly answered the presiding magistrate's questions concerning his identity. Ke then took off his overcoat, folded it deliberately and sat down and surveyed the crowded court-room. He fixed his famous hypnotic stare on the spectators, who in most cases turned away nervously. Accused is said to have admitted the kiiling of sixty-three persons between 1941 and 1944. The poliee have definitely identified twentyseven persons from the remains found in a death chamber in the doctor's house in Paris. It is in respect of these that he was charged j to-day. There are more than fifty witnesses for the proseeution and over twenty for the defence. The trial is expected to last at ieast a fortnight.
