INDIAN INDEPENDENCE

PEOPLE'S RIGHT TO CHOOSE MR. ATTLEE'S STATEMENT LONDON, March 15. ' ' There is complet'e agreement on the fact that India today is in a state of great tension. This is indeed a criticaJ moment," said the Prime Minister (Mr. Attlee), speaking in the debate in the House of' Commons on the forthcoming Ministerial mission to India. "The members of the mission are undertaking their task in a positive mood. This is emphatically the time for definite and clear action." There had been in the past many faults on all sides, but we should look to the future instead of harking back, he said. The temperature of 1946 was not the temnerature of 1920, of 1930, or even of 1942.Mr. Attlee said that the Government intended that the mission "be given as free a hand as possible. It was not any wonder that India, having twice within the quarter-century fought against tyranny, now claimed the freedom to decide her own destiny.
