WANTED GUIDERS

AN APPEAL TO WOMEN. The blue uuifonu of the Girl Guides aud Raiigers, aud the brown uniforni of the Brownies are well-knowu aud respected in both war aud peace. "lf you want souiethiug done well aud quickly, ask a Guide to do it, " is frequeutly said. "Guides kuow how. " Guides do not kuovv how to do everything, but they do kuow how to do souie of the thiugs uot fouud iu the school curriculuni, aud eousequently they display au unusual haudiuess aud reliability iu emergeucies. The reasou is that Guiding opens doors to aetivities that most girls think are beyond theni, and which,t. moreover, are of beneiit to themselves and of service, to other people. The person who opens the doors for Guides is the Guider, the young woman in eharge of Browuie paek, Guide compauy, or Ranger compauy. Fond of children ajid of being out of doors, she is imaginative yet capable, humorous yet sensible, a friend and elder sister aud a leader all in oue. .She receives no payment for her services, and has to give up at lea;?t half a day a week aud an afternoou aud evening a month in order to cope with the neods of her charges; but she is t'he most important member of the movement because she is dealing directly with youth and the problems of youth. By her initiative and enthusiasm she draws out each chijd 's latent possibilities, and starts a habit of living that, once set in motion, will eontinue throughout life. Special appeals for Guiders are being tnade at the present time all ovef Now Zealand. Hundreds of girls who, fired by the energetie, progressive programme that Guiding presents, and wishing to learn wliat ihe movement can teaeh them, are denied t his outlet for their energies because there are not enough Guiders to cope with their needs. The vitality and energy of youth, if riglitJv directed, is capable of the greatest good, but, if ailowed to waste itself iu boredom and frustration, can be equally bad. It is hoped that some of the women who have been doing war sevvice for the past few years, and others who already krrow something about Girl Guiding, will realise the seriousness of the present position and offer their assistanee. Tf so, will they please com inunieate with the Guide Comrnissioner in their district, or write to the Dominion secretary, Miss M. Iles, Box 147, Hastings?
