c — V 1 . Personal Mr, Ron Parr, R.N.Z.N., is spending ten days' leave with his people in Shannon. ; Mr. Norman. Callesen, of Mangaore, has returned home from a holiday in the Waikato district. Mrs. Ken Henry, Kelburn, is stay-. ing with her mother, Mrs. C. B. Gunning, Bryce Street. The friends of Mrs. Don Higgie will be pleased to hear that she returned home last evening after spending about a week in hospital. Mr. Batt, Snr., who has been an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital for a number of months, has left for Christchurch to spend a holiday with his daughttr. During her school days and ever since, Miss Aileen McEwen has had very indifierent health necessitating long periods in hospital and inactivity at home. It is pleasing tQ be able to report that after several weeks' holiday with relatives in Nelson she has been able to take up her first position in a Nelson shop. Letters dated February 21, 1946, from Mrs. C. W. Massey (nee Betty Coley ) to her mother state that she is very happily settled in a flat at Ocean Beach, San Diego, California, and fmding life very much to her liking, especially as at any time her husband was expecting his discharge from the army. The different methods of cooking and preparing meals caused her worry at first, but to offset this was the joy of so little laundry work, tea towels, face towels, table cloths, table napkins and best of all baby's diapers are made of paper. After weighing the pros and cons Betty has decided to take out papers to enable her to become an American citizen. Card Party With the object of raising funds the first weekly flag 500 card party organised by the Wumen's branch of the R.S.A. was held on Monday night. There was a good attendance and a table of three players" were the winners: — Messrs. R. Robert, Dal. Harris and S. McLaggan. Mushrooms in Plenty After the last few days of warm rain, the high ' ground around Shannon is yielding a large crop of mushrooms. It is not uncommon in the early morning to s.ee local children-'.- and the older folks, too, carrying laden baskets and making their way home after a successful expedition over the meadows. Even though the stake may be rationed, the mushrooms are there for the taking and no coupons are required. •
