MUCH GOOD PIG FOOD HARVESTED
Applications for the crop sulisidy are comi'ng in fairlv freely and to date therc are 3.14 elaims covering a variety of crops, Mr. L. L. Marsdon, Hupervisor, reported to the Wellington District Pig Council yesterday in Palmerston North. The majority of pea crops 011 dairy farms bad either been stacked or pressed and much valuable winter feed liad been saved. Home really excellent bar-* ley crops bad been saved and it was not uncommon to get yields of (50-70 bushels to the acre. The weather as a whole liad been excellent for harvesting and much good grain bad been set aside for pig food. The growing of roots had been fairlv extonsive throughout the area. In soine parts of the Wairarapa and Dannevirke districts the long spell without rain had given iiiany crops a bad set back and yields would be Jiglit. Where a lot of rain had fallen till December, weed growth had been bad and much worlc had been entailed in keeping carrot, sug'ar beet and matigold crops in anytliing like good order. Nothwithstandiug, sonie really good crops had been raised. The long drv spell in manv districts, had caused a drastic fall in milk production and the rains had been too late iu coming to oxpect any coihe-back froni 'the ' bu'lk of the herds in those areas. In turn, byproducts had been in short supplv and niany liglit pigs and choppers had been sold as a result. | Farmers wlio have not forward»d i their crop subsidy t'orius, must do so bej t'ore the end of March. Mr. A. Johnson spoke in commenda- : tion of the efl'ort put up by farmers in I tlie Sanson district, in growing barley this season. Hc said they had made a very valuable contribution to the pig food position. A subsequent discussion revealed that much of the barley had been sent straight from the farm to the consumer and letters of appreciatiou had comc to liand. It was pointed out that these transactions had not been through the Pig Council as had been stated in certain circles, but -been accomplished as tlie result of activities of tlie fanners themsel ves. A motion cougratulating tlie Sanson growers, was passed.
