WADDINGTON, March 14. "The opinion expressed by Mr. A. L. Monteith, the workers' representative on the Arbitration Court. during the hcaring.of an application for interpre tation of an avvard in Dunedin, 'tliat the Labour Department was wrong in* 90 per cent of its interpretations', is not borne out in fact, " states Mr. H. F. Moston (Secretary of Labour). "The department is not called upon to give interpretations, but is frequently asked by both workers ' and employers ' organisations for its opinion as to the meaning of various provisions of stat* utes, awards, orders, etc. Mr. Mon teith c-annot be aware of the number and nature of the opinions given throughout. the Dominion by the department 's inspectors and by the head office as the matters involved in the great majority of cases do not come before 'the Court, the department 's views be* ; ing accepted by the parties concerned. From my knowledge of the situation, I feel that the percentage of error in the department 's opinions" would be nearer 10 per cent than the 90 per cent slated by Mr. Monteitli, ' ; »' / " ■
