OTAKI BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING
The monthly meeting of the Otaki Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr. C. F. Atmore) presiding. There were also present: Crs. Young, Hakaraia, Bartosh, Bennett and Cook. Cr. Gimblett was granted leave of absence. To Meet In Otaki The N.Z. Red Cross Society wrote advising that the executive had chosen Otaki Beach -as the venue for a campus conference of /the Wellington Centre committees of the society. About, 80 to 100 would participate, the delegates to represent from Upper Hutt to East Harbour of Wellington City, suburban sub-centres and East Coast districts to Waikanae, the centre's boundary. Further arrangements would be made. The conference dates wrould be from March 22 to 24 inclusive. — Received. Increased Wages Sought . . The Trades Workers' Industrial Union wrote pointing out that the present rate of award expired on April 1 next, and advising that a request was to be made for an increase of at least 10 per cent in the rate of wages, together with a 40-hour, 5-day week for all workers. — To have necessary consideration.
Sunday Trains Mr. L. G. Lowry, M.P., wrote acknowledging the Council's letter in connection with Sunday trains to Otaki. He stated that he would be pleased to give support to the request, and hoped for an urgent and favourable reply in the near future. — Noted.
Rangiuru Stream • The Manawatu Catchment Board wrote stating that the Council's letter had been considered in conjunction \vith a letter from the resident engineer, Public Works Department, Palmerston North,. advising the board that the department had no intention of doing any work on the opening up of the mouth of the Rangiuru Stream in the near future, and that the intention of the department was to give this work further consideration when the m^in job of the tciwer excavator was well advanced. The board had decided to ask its engineer to report on the position, and tp take. .the jnattcx up ,-with the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council in an endeavour to secure some alleviation of the position in the near future. — Received. Correspondence A letter was received from Mr. A. Bishop relative to work he had done at the cemetery. — Amount of £40 'to be paid, less £10 for trees. Mr. C. W. Foster, surveyor, wrote stating that Mr. Beattie, after consideration, had agreed to make an entrance on the north side of his section at Otaki Railway. — It was stated that all was now in order. The • Director of Parks and Reserves stated that he was horrified when in Otaki to find that two loads of street sweepings had been dumped outside his section on Waerenga Road to fill up a depression, and that it was full of convovulus. He asked that immediate steps be taken to have the sweepings removed. — Cr. Bartosh oifered to give the matter attention, and the works committee was given power to act. Mr. J. C. Meyer wrote stating that
over six months ago he had made application to the Council to clean a drain aiong his boundary in Dunstan Street. The work had never been done and the water was damaging his garden. He would be pleased to have early attention given the matter. Cr. Bartosh remarked the matter was not one to worry about, while Cr. Cook stated that he had visited the loeality and thought there was defective drainage. Mr. B. H. Rhodes, secretary of the Otaki Fire Board, submitted that body's annual report and balancesheet.— Received. General Matters Cr. Bartosh reported on work done at the theatre, and stated that the price charged appeared exorbitant. ^ , Rates were reported by the town clerk (Mr. Wilson) to be coming m well; those residents whose rates were still outstanding had been notified, and it was thought that these would shortly be paid. It was decided to adjust the Municipal Croquet Club's account the Council being liable for part of the work done. Matters in connection with the extraordinary water supply "were considered and will be given further attention.
A letter was read from the r.s.a. relative to work at the cemetery, and matters are to be arranged between the Department of Internal Affairs and the R.S.A. Cr. Cook pointed out that ohe Athletic Club desired the removal of the fence from the west side of the domain to a piace about 12 feet in front of the graiidstand. This was desired as a barrier to keep the general public back from the sports area. It was pointed out that the Cricket Club and other sports bodies would have to have consideration, but- it was stated that the removal of the fence would in no way affect these bodies. It was necessary that spectators be kept back to avoid possible accidents. — Agreed that the matter have ihe desired attention. It was reported by the clerk chat four-inch pipes would shortly be available, and these would be )aid from Waerenga Road corner to'wards the bridge for a distance of 20 chains. The matter of appointmg an overseer was left in abeyance. Reference was made to the "dump," it being stated that it was offensive. Cr. Bartosh stated that he had made an inspection and found no bad smell, but it was noticeable tfiat the public were abusing their rights by dumpmg anything anywhere in the locality. It was reported that the proposed widening of -Arthur Street had been -considered satisfactory by landowners interested, and agreed that Mr." Foster be asked to prepare plans, etc.. The Mayor and the town clerk were appointed delegates to the Municipal conferences to be held this month. It was recommended that when the bitumen s ealing of Convent Road was done, then Domain Road, Bell Street, Kirk Street, Riverbank Road and Rangiuru Road be done with tar primer. It was decided to write to Mrs. McMillan asking whether she was runningj the motor camp for Easter. The use of the domain was grant,ed the Otaki Amateur Athletic Club for a meeting on Apri-l 6, with the right to charge adults ls 6d and children 6d for admission. Accounts totalling £224 7s 3d were passed for payment.
