"Christchurch, March 14, The vete'ran Ashburton .racehorse owner and trainer, Joshua James Lewis, died at Ashburton this morning at the age of e.ighty. He was. well known . for his knowledge of veterinary science and practice, and for many years had been actively associated with racing in Canterbury. The best horse he trained was Lady Lillian, winner of the Great Easter and Great Autumn double at Riccarton in 1903, a feat. that had been accomp- 6 lished by Lady Lillian's dam, Lady Zealand, in'1874. , Lewis raced Wharncliffe, which won many races for him, including the Trentham and Grand National Hurdles. Wharncliffe was a • gift horse from Mr. J. H. Grigg, Longbeach. Welbeck was also raced siiccessfully in partnershipi with Mr. Thomas, but had an exasperating run of minor places at the N.Z. Cup meetings in 1902, being runner-up in the N,Z..Cup, the Derby and Canterbury Cup.
