"AUTOMAT BUFFET CARS"
Britain's railways, after six years of austerity travel, are doing their utmost to restore the old comforts and introduce new ones. The latest is Great Western's decision to start a sixpence-in-the-slot food service on short-distanee main iine trains "as soon as conditions permit." Each train will have an "automat buffet car," and passengers will be able to buy a great variety of food at any time by inserting a coin into the siot of one of the many hundreds of compartments. There will be sandwiches, salads, savouries, cakes, fruit, chocolate, confectionery, ice cream, cigarettes and even drinks in wax cups.
