WELCOME HOME SOCIA1 A "smoko" was held on Saturday night at tne Hotei Jubilee to welsome home members of the Rahui Football Club who recently returnea from overseas. There was an Atoendaiice oi aoouo xirty inexnbcio. and supporters of the club. Pending the ariivai oi the newly-* elected president (Mr. H. G. Wylie) , „he past president (Mr. A. Knox) jccupied the chair. He extended a nearty welcome . to members who nad recently returned, stating that it was with pleasure that they were oeing entertained, while it was very gratifying to kn,ow that ali were fit and weil. After the toast of "The King" Mr W. Kendrick proposed the toast of "The Ladies," and in doiug ^poke of tneir valuable services and ,ne help they had been in catering for the men while away. Mr. Carkeek, who responded, stated that it was a well-known fact that the ladies had done much.
"The Boys From Overseas" was the toast proposed by Mr. Moffatt vvno spoke very highly of thei. actions while away, adding that they had worthily upheld the honmr of New Zealand. Messrs. Macleod, Kendrick, Ferguson, Morrab and Walker responded expressing thanks to the Rahui Club for its thoughtfulness at all times. The actions of the club had been fully appreciated, while it was gratifying to be able to attend the smoko and again renew acquaintances. Mr. Southgate, in endorsing the remarks of the proposer, stated that all were pleased to be in a position jO welcome the men, and in proDosing the toast of the R.S.A. paid i glowing tribute to the spiehdid vork done by that body. He advised all to participate and reap the Denefits that wCre available. Mr Edhouse, in reply, agreed that returned men would gain manj advantages, and suggested thej join up and thus heip make thc oody a very powerful one. It wa' >vell known, said the speaker, oi the help already given returned loldiers, and ali were pleased n_ know that the Government wai giving a backing. Remits, etc. which had been forwarded hac received most favourable consideration. Men joining up would be assured of a nearty welcome. "The Maoris and the Maori Battalion" was proposed by Mr. Dave Blake, who spoke highly of the Native race in general, and also referred to their gallant actions, overseas; Mr. Carkeek, replyin^;, ,aid he fully appreciated the word. of the speaker, and tha,t it was j pleasure to know that the Maori and Pakehas had fought shoulder t shoulder. Fress" was proposed by M. 'at Ferguson,' whiie Messrs. Mao .eod and Southgate added testi aony to the power of the Press. Mj. 1. Nicolson repiied. The health of Mr. and Mr: .IcFetridge was then toasteo. peakers testifying to the generos ty of both in placing rooms, etc it the disposal of the club, besiae nelping otherwise.
