GREATER PRODUCTION

SUPPORT FROM ALL QUARTERS 'MR. -F. P. WALSH'S APPEAL WELLINGTON, March 7. . Instant svqiport and connuendation has been foitiicuining from tlie presi dent of the New Zeaiand Bniployers5 Federation, the presi dent of the Associa'ted Chambers of .Commerce and tlie •pres'ident of -the New Zealand Farmers' Cnion for the statement by Mr. F. P. \Valsli appeaiitig for greater production and opposing any furthei reduction in the hours of work. Mr. Walsh has also been warmly eommended by the Alinis>er of Finance (ilon. Walter Nasli) who saj'-s that the thanks of the Government' are due to Mr. Walsh for having stated its policy in such clear language and tn such short conipass. Mr. Walsh 's statement was made to Ihe nationaJ council of the New Zealand Federation of Labour. It drew atcention to eleinents of danger which he sees in the condition of New Zealand '? economy. He was reporting to the • ederation as its representative on the Eeonomic Stabilisation Cemmissioii. When Mr. AValsh ;s report was read in Wellington today, eomment on the ax_>peal he made tvas given as follows: — The president ofy the New Zealand Employcrs' Federation (Alr. Percy Coyle) said: "Mr. AValsh 's statement is to be eommended. He has dealt with daugerous elements in New Zealand 's economy very frankly and T eannot see how anybody caa disagree with his philosophy regarding maximnm production as being the most osSential factor 'n the present situation. Mr. Walsh wisely points out that, if primary production for export is 10 per cent Alown this season. our sterling receipts must be down, which in tuni reduc.es our stcrbng available to purchase* imports to the same extent. A further factor would be cooperation between private enterprise and the State, so that the former could be placed in a position to purchase more of the goods that are l oqujred. ' ' Eifect on Primary Industry. The president of tlie New Zealand Farmers' Hnion (Mr. AAT. AAr Aful holland) said: "Tf we are going to continue tlie, standard of living we believe we have had, then we liave got to jnst get down to the ,]ob and produce goods. I quite agree with Mr. AA'alsh. 'n the present state of short supplyof all consumer goods, working on onlv (ive daj's a week is simplv .ridicnlous. Docreased production in the primary indnstrv must follow a shortening of ef fort in secondary industry, and if we continue on that line of shortening of effort, it must inevitably lead to a con dition of famine. even in this favoured land of ours. Tf al! sections of the community will realise this and join with Mr. AATalsh in his determinution to produce more by increased effort, sncli a disastrous state can be avoi 1ed. ' ' The president of. the Federation of Labour (Ilon. A. McLagan) said: "J may be niaking a statenient in due course. " "The Government 's thanks are due to ' Mr. AA'alsh for having stated the Government 's policy in such clear language and in such short conipass," said Mr. Nasli in commenting on the statement. "Mr. Walsh has reiterated with great claritv whaL has been set forth by myself on behalf of the Gov ormnent for a" long time, " said Mv. Nasli. "That is, that our financial posi tion is good and our financial fonndn tions aie sonnd, but that they can re main so only on the basis of production. It. is the production of goods and services that makos the fonndations of our economic and social life. There is nothing else in the long run to live on. Tt is in accord with the (Sovern inent ;s policy, as so nbly set out bv ATr Walsh, that production under good con diiions oi one can ensure a -f-'n.ti'r" worthv of wliat we have done during h e wa r years.
