AWAPUNI FINALS FOR TRENTHAM
Main interest in the tinal trials for Wellington at Awapuni yesterdav morning was centred in the Autumn Handicap candidates, and of tliese nothing pleased more than the Masterton winner, Alethea, who galloped in great style over a mile. The course proper, with the pegs out 30 f'eet, was available for fast work and, as a result of recent rain, the going was in perfect order. Commenciug slowly from the mile post, Beneve and Meri'y Robin were timed to complete the last seven furlongs in 1.41 4-5, with the unnej- doing it much the better. After running the first half-iuile in 54sec., Theiolvn cut out seven furlongs in 1.34 2-5. The grey is racing much more consistently now, and has been placed in his last five staxts.
Phalaria had the assistance of the two-year-old Coronara over half a mile run in 52 2-5sec. The former is beariug a very bright appearance and may not be without prospects in the Rimu Highweight. Rink strode over seven furlongs in 1.35 2-5. His stablemate Mesaliiance was not riddcn out to record 1.36. Gala Song, who .appears to have lost all form, came liome the last three furlongs of her work in 40 2-5sec. Man's Pride, a likely lookiug gelding by JMan's Pal from Paper Rose, was not bustled to run half a mile in 55 4-5sec. Yoltaic .,wcu\kyd. leisurely over live furlongs in 1.10. Alethea (Sellars; just shaded -Saludos (Borcham) and Langue d'Or (Waddell) at the conclusion of a mile iu 1.47 2-5, the best figures for the morniiig. The former worked with great dash and appears all the better for her race at Masterton. She tis a definite prospect for the Autumn Handicap. Langue d'Or did not hit out too freely in the early stages but, after trailiug the others to the straiglit, he (inished strongly to nlalte up cousideral)le grouud. Although no fault could be found with the way Saludos worked, he was a trifle sore on cooling ofl'. He has been causiug some auxiety the last couple of weeks, and his trainer, C. J Thomson, stated that there is still some doubt about him starting tomorrow. A. Johnson has been engaged to ridc him. Alumnus beat Airpier over lialf-a- . uiile, but was not timed. Young Margaret, who has been sprinting consistently well, pleased by the effortless nnmuer in which she got to the end of (ii'e furlongs in* 1.5 1-5, the last three being run in 39 l-5sec. Finaneial (Bowness) and Lady Spiral (Waddell) .were associated over a mile iu 1.48 1-5. They wcnt faist eaxdy, but were slowing up over the fmal stages and it took tlieni 41 2-5see for the last three furlongs. They flnislied on terms, and both are bearing a wcll-trained apjjearunce. W. Jenkins is to ride Finaneial in the Autumn Handicap. Roto Parera had the measure of Kelmont at the conclusion of a mile run in 1.49, the last three furlongs in 40 4-5 sec.
