Wellington Fields in Review
..j... • i Wealth of Good Form in Main Events j . Main interest in the racing world to-morrow will^ be centred on Trentham where the opening day of the Welling- ! ton Racing Club's two-day fixture ushers in the Autumn Racing : season. Recent rains have made the tracks a good deal easier and in some respects may upset the form. Much, however, | will depend on the weather conditions in the interval.
! The fields are well up to the usual I Trentham standard, with its many problems for punters, but excellent j racing is assured and a largt att endance is anticipated. Betting will of "course be win and place. Rimu Highweight The most recent winner in the ■ opening event, Kelmont, won fairiy tonvmeingiy on Saturday last after i .wo disappointing races earlier. The neld however was not strong. Carnlorth who ran second in that race ij a likely improver while others with winning form this season are Abdicate, The Monarch, Phalaria, Merger and True Friend. Consisoent place form supports ,the cnances also of Harris Tweed, Court Judge, Little Billy, Gold Ciaim and Our Jock. Merger i > a most reliable and consistent performer and it may be iound. that on the day most support \viii be accorded him with Phalaria and Kelmont next in demand. Plunket Nursery 1 as a large neld carded for the ; two-year-old handicap in which ; winning , form is represented in Omit, Hiraji, Karachi, Malanui, mue Tie, Fiymg Robin, Tribute ana Shining Ring. Hiraji, with three vVxiis m a row, comes from the norih with a fair reputation and may Dossibly be the actual favourue. karachi also has been most consistent and perhaps a trifle uniucky while there will be considerabie interest in Tribute, a halfcrother to Subdued, the speedy filly who beat Nawab a couple of seasons oack. Recent place-getters with some claims for support are wpuient, Sea Furv and Royal Baron, ihe iatter was badly left in his last siart and unwound a great turn of opeed ro get second at Awapuni in January. It may be that he will be the oue to worry Tribute, Hiraji and Karachi.
N.I. Challenge Stakes The regppearance of Kindergaroen will give added interest to .xie nieeting and to this race in particalar. R.eports indicate that j tne former champion has been get- ; ting through some useful work but I ui this race he will have to meet j some seasoned gallopers who will fuliy extend him. Exeter, who has to concede him lOlbs, is a good weight-carrier and the Derby winner iii-Sirat, and Wellington Stakes j winner Feter Robinson afe both i highly regarded and capable of winj ning. Tne local three-year-old ! nowever may possibly be reserved ij xor his iater engagement. A model I oi consistency, Deprive, must also J *oe given consideration wnile among I the two-year-olds Spiora and Zea- - -lauder are not without prospects. ! The iatter in fact impresses as being one who might develop into a guod quality colt and may give most troubie 10 those on the top of tne scale.
Autumn Handicap ; This rienjy endoweti mile and a — haif event bears a very open appearance and with the accumuN lation of summer form practically jj every runner has some claim for serious attention. The top weight, Foxhaven, .aiways a good pertormer at Trentham, appears to be right at ' .he peak of his form and should be 1 able to collect some of the purse. J Finaneial has lost caste by his most i recent efforts but a reproduction of i his Christmas form would make him i a likeiy prospect. Langue D'Or, auother with a liking for Tren- |! ..hani, may not be so keenly sought jj uiter as the two stabie-mates : Alethea and Saludos. The Iatter has | aiso another engagement. Cowper i has fair northern form. Royal I i_,ancer's second on Saturday may i indicate an early return to his best form. Lady Spiral is not without I ; prospects while of the lighter diy- ! 'ision Barrage, Matador and Royal I 7ictor are expected to come in for j good support. This trio, all of which |j are improvers, will give most j troubie to those at the head of the j handicap.
I j Tinakori Hack Handicap j The South Island bracket, Grill ! and Patmos, have a good reputaI cion and as both are recent winners I it would not surprise to see them II head the favoured list in this hack ' i race. Specialist has done well ehQUgh on the Taranaki circuit to me'215 jnuch attention while Balcherrie, - Kincrop, Tahli, Yarrow, ^ Lady Delight, Gay Stock, Cere-- ]\ ' monious, E1 Santo and True Friend I are not without chances. At^ this I ctave Ceremonious and Specialist:J j look like giving most troubie to the I Griil-Patmos bracket. Thompson Handicap ' As a result of having downed the champion, Golden Souvenir, on his last visit to Trentham Irish Note has been allocated a good weight in j the Thompson but he is a good ' horse and it should not stop him. 1 Master Dash's mission has not yet been announced but if started here J will have a good following while the i form of Da Vinci on Saturday last ! orought him into favour and at the ! noment" appears as the one to give : most troubie to the top weight. ' Benbecula is fancied in some quarters while Taranaki hold out great hopes for their representative, Alderman. Kuri is entitled also to -v/. J much respect in the light of his last
Trentham success while Saludos, if reserved can be expected to bt prominent. Bonny Flight, a winner at Dunedin last Saturday is anothei southern hope and reports indicate that she is good. Alright, Gay Stroller, Western Front and Foxcatcher have sorhe form on their side but Irish No'te is prime fancy and the pair to extend him may oe Da Vinci and Kuri.
Railway Handicap For the open aprint the two at the head of the handicap Master Dash and Peter Robinson both have prior engagements but it will not surprise to see them reserved for this event, in which they would probably be the favourites. Blue Bonny, Donegal Bay, Poutatau, Baby Girl, Zulu Boy, Gigli, Lady Nahleen, Centime and Democracy all have some form on their side. At this stage Peter RobinSon makes most appeal with Donegal Bay and Democracy next in line. Silverstream Handicap The iieid for the concluding race may likely be less than a dozen but it should prove a good betting affair. Leighon's Glory, Gynerio, Night Foe, Magic Art, Montosorrie, Cuba and Bicter Sweet have recent wm ning form on their side while Blanket, Blue Moon and The Saddier are three improvers. A trio that will command respect are Bitter Sweet, Night Foe and Blanket.
