WELLINGTON. March 5. Sir Charles Statham, former Speaker of the House oi Representa'tives, died suddenly at his home in Wellington this morning. The late Sir Charles was born a Dunedin 71 years ago, being theldest and only surviving rnn r Rev. Canon C. H. Statham. He was ednrated at privKe sciiools anc Otago Boys' High School. O' entermg commercial life he trained as an accountant and studled law becoming a solicitor in 1901 and r barrister in 1906. H; se~vcd r>n th Dunedin City Council in 1911 and 1812 retiring the following. year. lir Charles first entered politics in 1911, and repre^ented nun°dr Cenfral continuously up to the time of his retirement in 1935, being Speaker of the House from 1923. He was a past president of the N.Z Company of Master Mariners, N.Z. Football Association and Otag'o Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He was elected. .an honorary life Fellow of the ' nternational Accountants' Corporation, and was associated with many other social and athletic organisat4 ~ *4vi ^un^din.
