FURTHER DEMONSTRATION'S

Received Sunday, 9.15 p.m. CALCUTTA, March 3; Police with lathis chargcd a large crowd demonstrating in front of a mill at Pondicherry. The demonstration followed a -decision hy the mill authorities to requisition workers under police protection to replace strikers. Thousands of labourers carrying C'o'mmunist fiags marched to the mill to protest. > The head of the combined. police and military services sent an armed . contingent to the mill area to prevent the demonstrators from entering the Euro- ' pean quarter. The s'ituation at Jubbulpore, where Indian Signals Corps niemhers struck, is easier. The president of the All-India Congress, Dr. Azad, said the struggle j against the Government was in abey- J ance until there was a iefusal to trans- j fer power. There should be wiiling co- j operation between the temporary GoV- ; erninent and the people of the food j front, whicn was India's inrmediate j concern. Strikes, demonstrations, hartals and processions v/ould not be held. A Southern Connnand Headquarters communique states that the guaras whf were mounted on the Royal Indian Navy ships after the unconditional surrender of the niufcineers are being I .vithdrawn.
