SEARCHES IN JERUSALEM SAFEGUARDS FOR INQUIRY

Received Monday, 10.25 a.m. JERUSALEM, March 3. A series of combined police and military searches were carried out in the heart of the Holy City to-day under the eyes of crowds of Sunday morning strollers. A number of suspected terrorists were detained after more than fifty persons had been questioned. Meanwhile, with the AngloAmerican Inquiry Commission expected in a few days, additional security measures are being taken. Brick pillboxes, heavily reinforced with steel concrete, have been erected near the post office, while additional barbed wire barricades have been erected outside King David Hotel. where the members of the commission will stay, and which is British Army headquarters. Scores of plain-clothes men have been assigned to act as bodyguard for members of the commission and their staffs.
