Brigade’s double call-out
It was a case of "double trouble” for the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade earlier this week; The sounding of the fire siren brought residents to the street during Wednesday afternon and members of the brigade made for the fire station in London Street. In quick .order an engine was sent off, heading out of town, and was soon followed by another. The cause of the alarm was a double fire. ■. The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s rubbish dump and the Lyttelton Borough Council’s rubbish dump had both caught alight at the same time. Both fires were put out without incident. Small-boat forecast Light, variable winds tending to southerly in the afternoon and rising to 20 knots over open water; slight seas, moderate overnight, with a southerly swell rising to two metres; mainly light rain today.
