Queensland police say meat threat a hoax
NZPA-AAP Brisbane
The Queensland police have dismissed a meat poisoning threat in Brisbane as a hoax and have lifted the ban on meat sales from supermarkets. The ban was placed on Thursday night after a group calling itself Brisbane Animal Rights Militia said it had injected rat poison into foodstuffs in
Brisbane and nearby supermarkets. "I am certain now the threat was a hoax,” Queensland’s Police Comissioner, Sir Terence Lewis, said yesterday. The precautions were necessary because he would not at first treat the threat as a hoax. Sir Terence said that the police had monitored hospitals, clinics, and doc-
tors overnight and no-one had reported symptoms of poisoning.
“The Poisons Information Centre has informed us that the amounts of poison likely to have been administered by injection from a syringe would not be sufficient to cause any danger to health. “Only large doses over a long period were likely to be dangerous.”
