Namibia self-govt talks
NZPA-Reuter Cape-Town South Africa was considering setting a date for the independence of Namibia (South West Africa), as part of a United Statesbrokered regional peace settlement, diplomatic sources said yesterday.
The South African Foreign Minister, Mr Roelof Botha, has held talks with a United States envoy, Chester Crocker, in Geneva this week. He said that there was no decision on a date, although he did not deny the Idea was being considered. Western diplomats said a fixed date for the implementation of a United Nations plan for Namibian independence should help American efforts to start the withdrawal of about 25,000 Cuban troops from Angola. Washington and Pretoria have insisted that the independence of Namibia be linked to a Cuban withdrawal from Angola. Angola’s Marxist Government has refused to send the Cubans home unless South Africa allows Namibian independence.
