Cafe staff walk out
Cafeteria staff at a Hornby factory and workers at a Shirley fastfood outlet walked off the job yesterday in protest against the breakdown of their award talks. Their action was part of a campaign to disrupt service from cafeterias, restaurants, takeaway bars, and fast-food outlets. The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the Hotel Workers’ Union, Mr Martin Moodie, said that a full strike was unlikely in spite of anger felt by members at their low pay. Walk-outs, pickets, and a public education pro-
gramme would be included in the campaign. “We want to make the public aware of how badly our people are paid when compared with the profits these places (food outlets) make,” said Mr Moodie. Award talks broke down when the union’s claim for a 30 per cent pay increase was rejected by employers, who offered between 17 and 19 per cent. Workers covered by the Tearoom and Restaurant Workers’ Award will meet at the Reperatory Theatre tomorrow to discuss the dispute.
