Ambulance talks stall
Christchurch ambulance drivers have given 14 days notice of industrial action after their award talks stalled yesterday.
A strike is unlikely, and drivers are still doing normal duties.
The secretary of the Canterbury Drivers’ Union, Mr Don Cunningham, said meetings of drivers during the next two weeks would decide what, if any, action would be taken. No lives would be put at risk under any circumstances, he said.
Drivers had claimed a pay increase of more than 20 per cent, employers had offered about 16 per cent.
Ambulance drivers were on the same basic rate of pay as truckdrivers, yet had to “help scrape bodies from the road,” and were often under severe stress, Mr Cunningham said.
The matter has been referred to the Arbitration Court,
