Prison staff strike averted

The possibility of a total stoppage by prison officers has been averted by the appointment of a mediator to investigate the dispute. The Minister of State Services, Mr Rodger, said a Dunedin mediator, Mr Walter Grills, would investigate the dispute oyer pay rates for prison officers and report back to him.

Mr Rodger’s intervention in the dispute closely followed an announcement of proposed industrial action by prison officers.
