Mr Molineaux waits

PA Wellington The Privacy Commissioner, Mr Paul Molineaux, may not be able to decide for several days whether to investigate allegations of misuse of the Wanganui Computer centre by policemen. Mr Molineaux said yesterday that he had still to satisfy himself that the allegations fell within the scope of the law under which he worked.

If he did investigate it would be independent of the police investigation of the allegations made in Christchurch by a former police sergeant. The police investigation was ordered by the Minister of Police, Mrs Hercus. Mr Molineaux said there were two ways he could have a role in considering the allegations. If a complaint was made to his office an investigation was mandatory. If no

complaint was made, it was up to him whether an investigation was made.

“If I come to the view that it does relate to the act I am free to go in.”

Mr Molineaux said the act gave him the power to do all the things “reasonably necessary ” to carry out his function as Privacy Commissioner. “It is a wide power and not to be exercised lightly. I don’t propose to be precipitate.”
