Gang split leads to shooting
A split in the ranks of the Mongrel Mob a few months ago erupted into a shooting affray in Christchurch early yesterday morning.
Two members of one faction burst into a flat in Gloucester Street, Linwood, and shot a member of the other faction twice in the legs with a pumpaction shotgun. The victim is reported in a satisfactory condition in Burwood Hospital after undergoing surgery.
Detectives believe he was a specific target. The shotgun raid followed
a brawl between the two factions in Cathedral Square about 2 a.m. The police yesterday appealed to both factions, one of which calls itself the Aotearoas, to calm down and not ■ to seek revenge. The Aotearoas group is believed to have North Island tribal origins. Th'e Christchurch C. 1.8. yesterday appealed for information about the vehicle used by the two balaclava-clad gunmen. “Someone probably saw it arriving at, or leaving from, the house at 405
Gloucester Street about 3 a.m.,” said a spokesman. Four persons were sitting in the lounge of the flat when the shooting happened. Only one was injured, although two shots were fired.
Detectives have not yet been able to interview the injured man. They have not discounted the possibility that the shotguns were stolen in a burglary of Shooters Supplies, Ltd, Riccarton, on Monday night No-one had been charged with the shooting by last evening, but a man will appear in the District Court this morning charged with unlawful possession of firearms. He was arrested after the police searched several city houses yesterday. I
It was not known if the occupants of the flat where the shooting occurred had been involved in the fight in Cathedral Square.
