‘Press’ golf bid
By
BOB SCHUMACHER
Few North Island golfers have competed in “The Press” women’s invitation 54-hole stroke tournament since its inception in 1975, and certainly none has threatened to take away the title. That situation could change this year when the twelfth tournament is held at Waitikiri on February 22 and 23. Two young, highly promising national representatives from the North Island will endeav-
our to end the South Island dominance. Jan Cook, the Bay of Plenty No. 2, and Wellington’s No. 1, Tracey Hanson, have accepted invitations to be among the 42 low-handicap golfers who will compete in the event Miss Cooke’s game developed markedly last year and she was the most successful of the New Zealand side, and that also included Miss Hanson, which competed in Queensland last June.
The North Island pair will have the best of the South Island golfers in opposition. Three previous champions, including the present title-holder, Jeannette Ross, are in a highclass field. The other previous champions competing again are Liz Douglas, the Canterbury no. 1 who won the event in 1978 when representing Southland and the three-times titleholder, Debbie Smith, of Motueka.
