Roydon Lodge top seller
By
G. K. YULE
A new record price for a filly, plus a firming in interest in the choicer lots, combined to make the national sale of standardbred yearlings, which ended yesterday in Christchurch the most successful yet. Roydon Lodge Stud and the stallions, Smooth Fella, Lumber Dream, Noodlum and Lordship, completely dominated proceedings. The day started with a great burst, with the first five lots realising fivefigure sums, being headed by the $50,000 paid by National Bloodstock, Auckland, for the Roydon Lodge filly by Smooth Fella from Roydon Kiwi Byrd, a member of the same family as Roydon Glen and Preux Chevalier.
Roydon Kiwi Byrd, a winner in the United States in the interests of Mr Roy McKenzie, of Wellington, was got by Bye Bye Byrd, a top North American sire, whose sons have done particularly well at the stud in New Zealand and Australia. There was another flurry of bidding when a colt by Noodlum from Witchlight entered the ring. A showy chestnut with a creamy-coloured tail, he is a half-brother to the 1984-85 two-year-old pacer of the year in Trident. It was that colt’s part-owner and trainer, Brian O’Meara, acting as agent, who went to $50,000 to secure him. The colt was offered on behalf of Messrs P. A. Cowan, of Dunedin, and D. A. G. Murray, of Mosgiel.
The sale was most successful with 97 lots being sold at an average of $B7Ol yesterday. For much of the day the average was a five-figure one,
but when a substantial number of lots not considered highly commercial by buyers came into the ring passings became frequent and prices generally fell.
There were 42 passings altogether yesterday, while there were 56 on the first day. Roydon Lodge continued its success with an aggregate of $214,000 for 12 lots, giving them an average of $17,833. The combined total of the two days was $1,470,750 for an average of $7993 for the 184 lots sold. Last year there was a record average of $7252 for 157 lots. Smooth Fella stood supreme among the stallions represented in the catalogue. He had 26 lots sold for a total of $550,750, an average of $21,182. In second place was Lordship with 13 lots averaging $10,253.
Lumber Dream was next with an average of $10,026 for 13 lots, followed by Noodlum with an average of $9073 for 17 lots.
The only other stallion to better the sale average was Game Pride, which was represented by two lots averaging $8250. Australian buyers laid out $109,300 for 11 lots, Mr Mick Lombardo, of Perth, again being the most active with four lots for $74,500. On the first day he paid $BB,OOO for three lots.
Australians bought 22 lots for $270,650 on the two days, an average of $12,302. The Smooth Fella-Idolmite colt passed in at $47,500 when offered on behalf of Mr Barney Tisdall,* of Dunback, on Thursday, has been bought by Wrightson Bloodstock for $50,000. The colt is to be syndicated and arrangements have been made for him
to be trained at Ladbrooks by Colin de Filippi, who was associated with Idolmite in much of her racing.
