Australian stocks firmer
NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer with the release of better than expected January balance of payments figures and strong demand for quality stocks pushing the market up, brokers said. At the close of trading the ail ordinaries index had risen 7.1 points to 1046.7, the all industrials index gained 6.9 points to 1598.4 and the all resources index put on 7.1 points to 624.2. The gold index improved 0.6 points to 880.9.
Turnover was 59.8 M shares worth 585.8 M, with falls outnumbering rises by 252 to 211. Brokers said the market had oversold in the previous two sessions in response to negative signals from abroad and locally. BHP was stronger, with about 1.6 M shares traded, and pushed through 700 to close 12c up at 706. Bell Resources gained 5c to 480 while its parent. Bell Group, added 14c to 650, and CSR put on 7c to 337.
