Aust. deficit falls $994M
NZPA-AAP Canberra Australia's current account deficit fell to $944M (5NZ1.238) in January from a $1.128 (5NZ1.468) deficit in December and a $1.238 (SNZI.6B) deficit in January last year, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said. The latest monthly deficit is below most forecasts by foreign exchange dealers who had said a deficit in the order of $1.38 (5NZ1.698) would have led to a slide In the Australian dollar. There was a SI4M (SNZIB.2M) surplus in the balance of merchandise trade compared to a $274M (5NZ356.2M) deficit in December and a S29OM deficit in January 1985, the ABS also said. The ABS said the current account deficit in the first seven months of the financial year ended January 31 was $8.418 (5NZ10.938) compared with $6.968 (5NZ9.048) in the same period of the 1984-85 financial year.
