Gondola project

Sir, — M. Dowds assumes that the administrators of the Summit Road (Canterbury) Protection Act 1963, must be naive to think that they would not consider the gondola proposal carefully when it is put to them. He fails to point out that the full purpose of the Act is “to provide for the preservation and protection of the scenic amenities associated with the Summit Road... and to provide for the improvement of facilities for the public enjoyment of those amenities.” The late Harry Ell not only strove to preserve and create new reserves but also to make them readily accessible to the people of Christchurch. Part of his plan was to establish a series of stone buildings at four to eight km intervals along the Summit Road, where people could stop for refreshment and enjoy the view. —r Yours, etc., J. R. MACKENZIE. February 12, 1986.
