Surf rescue
Sir, — My wife and I are honeymooning in Christchurch and were among the people reported on Wednesday as being saved from drowning at Taylors Mistake Beach, on Tuesday. We were extremely fortunate there were bach-holders at the beach at the time. We extend to them our eternal heartfelt thanks and gratitude. We strongly endorse the need for paid patrollers at Taylors Mistake during February, especially because many people holiday at this time. It is also crucial that warning signs are clearly posted when swimming is dangerous. Further, we know the city council Intends to have the baches demolished and to develop the beach as a holiday resort This planner’s dream is horrifying, given the unpredictability and dangerous swimming conditions that can exist at the beach. The council has a moral responsibility to ensure the safety of the public. If the bachholders go the council is culpable if any lives are lost in the future. — Yours, etc.,G. K. McELWEE.
