TVNZ counts down to comet
A television series 76 years in the making begins this evening on One at 5.45. “Halley Countdown” is a build-up to the March 14 encounter between Halley’s Comet and the European Space Agency’s Giotto Space probe. The Television New Zealand science unit in association with B.P. will have two hours “live from space” coverage of this celestial rendezvous. The series will be hosted by lan Johnstone, with Frank Andrews of the Carter Observatory. The first programme will take an historical look at the comet and discuss some of the myths surrounding it Peter Llewellyn, of “Fast Forward,” will present this film report Each of the four 15minute programmes leading up to the “once-in-a-lifetime” event will feature a segment titled "Giotto Update.” “This will let viewers know how far away the comet is from Earth, how far the Giotto probe is from the comet plus any other items of news or interest” says the producer, Denis Harvey. TVNZ also has access to three Halley Comet musical tracks that it hopes to include in the series, along with miscellaneous reports on the incredible variety of comet merchandise available around the world.
