Goats pour in by the thousands
Large numbers of Australian purebred goats are being imported into New Zealand with 1000 having crossed the Tasman so far this year compared to 2952 all last year. Goats from northern areas of Australia have not yet arrived in New Zealand following the lifting of a ban on their import on January 1. They must pass tests for blue tongue disease while
being held in Southern Australia for 40 days and then undergo 30 days quarantine before shipment to New Zealand. ■- Transport is the only limitation on the immediate importation of nearly 14,000 goats awaiting import from Australia, according to Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries animal import/export officers. “The flow of Australian goats into this country has now become quite regular, and we are having no problems,” said Mr Gordon Schwarz of the Animal Health Division. Southern areas are free of the fly which carries blue tongue disease. Abortions, haemorrhaging and reduced blood flow to the tongue, lips and feet of goats and sheep are symptoms of the disease. Goats from northern areas must undergo 30 days quarantine on arrival in New Zealand, whereas goats from areas previously free of blue tongue disease are quarantined only in Australia.
The first goats from northern areas of Australia should arrive in New Zealand during March.
The goats will be quarantined at the Trentham Quarantine Station in Lower Hutt
The * Silverstream Quarantine Station cannot be used, as it will have deer and llamas from the United Kingdom.
