AUSTRALIA Traders take profits

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets recorded their largest fall for three months with profit-tak-ing in industrial stocks and weaker oil and metal prices pushing the market down. At the close of trading the all ordinaries index had fallen 15.4 points to 1039.7, the all industrials index dropped 21.6 points to 1591.7 and the all resources index lost 10.6 points to 617.1. The gold index fell 19.6 points to 617.1. Turnover was 59M shares worth $96.7M, with falls outnumbering rises by 327 to 149. Brokers said market sentiment was bearish with fhe market nervous . before the release of the January current account deficit figures today, and there was heavy selling pressure. Weaker oil prices flowed on to BHP, which fell through 700 and reached a year's low of 690. The share price closed 12c down at 694. Bell Resources shed 15c to 475. Its parent, Bell Group, lost 34c to 636 while CSR lost 3c to 330. Mining stocks traded easier, with CRA losing 4c to 552, MIM 12c to 268, Peko Wallsend 14c to 490 and North Broken Hill 5c to 253. Gold-related stocks also eased, with GMK falling 20c to 800 and Poseidon 10c to 245. In the oil and gas sector Santos lost 8c to 454, Magellan 15c to 175 and Claremont 5c to 93. On the industrial boards profit-taking was the norm, with News Corporation dropping 45c to 1170, Rothmans 60c to 660, Fairfax 30c to 780 and Elders-IXL 15c to 325. Bond Corporation was traded heavily, with Rivkin specialling about 1.7 M shares at prices ranging from 232 to 240. The shares closed 10c down at 230. Elsewhere, Adsteam lost 20c to 1150, James Hardie 15c to 325, ACI 9c to 316 and Boral the same to 335. Ar-

notts was one of the few to gain, adding 10c to 350. Major banking stocks traded easier, with the ANZ and the National Australia Bank both losing 2c to 463, and Westpac remaining steady on 450. In share price index futures, active March opened 5.5 points lower at 1053.0 and traded down to close at 1040.0.
