P.M. slumps in poll

NZPA-Reuter London The personal popularity of the British Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher, has slumped to its lowest level since before the Falklands war in 1982, according to an opinion poll published yesterday. The Gallup survey, conducted for the “Daily Telegraph” newspaper, showed that 67 per cent of people questioned were dissatisfied with Mrs Thatcher and that 29 per cent approved of her leadership. The rest did not know.

The poll showed that 72 per cent of voters regarded her governing Conservative Party as a divided political organisation.

In reply to the question: “If there were a General Election tomorrow, which

party would you support?” 35.5 per cent backed the opposition Labour Party, 33.5 per cent supported the centrist Liberal-Social Democrat Alliance, and 29.5 per cent approved of the Conservative Party. Mrs Thatcher’s political standing has suffered badly in recent months because of her Government’s handling of the crisis over Britain’s financially troubled helicopter company, Westland.
