Pirates raid ship
NZPA-Reuter Bangkok Heavily-armed raiders boarded a Japanese container ship at sea and robbed it of cargo valued at thousands of dollars early on Wednesday morning. Shipping agents said it was the third pirate attack this month in Thai coastal waters.
Thai marine police said the ship was the Bangkokbound Monte Ruby, which left the Japanese port of Kobe on February 3.
Mana Phatharatham, general manager of Mitsui OSK Line (Thailand), which runs the 8180-ton Panamanian ■ registered Monte Ruby, said that an unknown number of armed pirates had approached in a speed boat and boarded the ship about 20km off Pattaya. The ship’s 18 unarmed crew were powerless to stop the armed raiders, he said.
The Monte Ruby’s master, Captain Odolo Canonigo had radioed for help but Thai authorities did not respond, he said.
