Firm reconsiders redundancies
Some of the clerical workers threatened with redundancy by Gordon and Gotch New Zealand, Ltd, could have a lastminute reprieve, thanks to the intervention of the Clerical Workers’ Union. After two days of redundancy negotiations, the company had agreed to reconsider whether all 25 clerical workers must go, said the union’s organiser, Ms Shelagh Docherty. The company’s clerical workers were told on Tuesday that they would be made redundant from
April 30 because the company was centralising its business in Auckland. Ms Docherty said that in spite of the centralisation of the distribution system, there should still be jobs for some workers in Christchurch to give a service for local retailers. The company had agreed to consider saving some jobs, and the talks would resume on February 24, she said. The company’s managing director, Mr Barrie Hitchon, could not be reached for comment.
