Servicemen yet to make submissions

PA Wellington The review committee considering public submissions on the future of defence policy has yet to hear from any serving members of the Armed Forces.

Confusion over this question arose when the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said members of the Forces had the right to make submissions to the review committee.

Shortly afterwards, servicemen and women were told they could not make submissions to the committee outright. Any submissions had to follow normal procedure and go up through the chain of command in each of the

three Services, they were informed. Information is not yet available on whether any Service people have made such requests through the chain of command. They do not have long before the deadline for submissions of February 28. Already the committee has received about 100 submissions from groups or Individuals. The first public hearing for the committee is also not long after that— Wednesday March 5 in Wellington. The committee ■ will then meet for two days in Wellington in the next week and two days in Auckland the week after

that. On both occasions the hearings will be held ‘ on Wednesdays and. Thursdays. They return to - Wellington for hearings > on Wednesday and Thursday on March 26 and 27. “ The first hearings in the ~ South Island will be in - Christchurch on April 2 1 and 3.

The committee will hear submissions in Auckland on April 9 and 10 • and in Wellington on April 23 and 24. The committee’s chairman, Mr Frank Corner, said there was also the possibility of another two days of hearings in Christchurch on April 16 and 17 r but this had yet to be ’ confirmed. 4
