Works unions review dispute

By GRANT BRADLEY A meeting of freezing works union officials and the Federation of Labour today may decide whether the meat works’ dispute will spread. The Meat Workers’; Union, freezing works tradesmen, and clerical union representatives will discuss the breakdown of their award talks.

The secretary of the Meat Workers’ Union, Mr A. J. Kennedy, would not speculate on the possibility of the dispute widening. Shift engineers went on strike at midnight last Sunday over the breakdown of their award talks and most meat workers throughout New Zealand have been suspended or have walked off the job because of the use of nonunion labour to do the engineers’ work.

The director of the Meat Industry Association, Mr Peter Blomfield, said an escalation of the dispute and a prolonged strike could have severe consequences.

Shipping schedules would be disrupted if meat could not be exported and farmers facing dry conditions could have problems if their stock could not be killed, he said.

Almost all of Canterbury’s meat workers are expected to be out of work by the end of today.
