Extradition delay annoys
PA Wellington The Government should act to speed extradition proceedings against the New Zealand-born faith healer, Armit Lal Narain, says the Opposition’s spokesman on Justice, Mr Paul East. He said the Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer, should approach his Australian counterpart and arrange for criminal extradition proceedings involving New Zealanders
to be heard in Australian courts at the first opportunity. A report from Sydney said proceedings against Narain, wanted by New Zealand police on kidnapping, assault and unlawful detention charges, could not be heard until January 29, 1987. This was because of the huge workload of Sydney courts. Mr East said it was totally unsatisfactory to
expect the New Zealand authorities to wait a year before they were able to argue the extradition case. “During this period of delay, it is possible that vital evidence could be lost and the police could lose contact with some of the witnesses,” he said. “The interests of justice demand that proper arrangements be made for speedy extradition hearings.”
