Beneficiary wields knife
A Social Welfare Department Interviewer was confronted by a knifewielding beneficiary at the department's Cathedral Square offices yesterday.
The man, aged in his 20s, produced a knife and threatened Mr Stephen Moore after he was told that he could not get any money until later in the day.
The regional director of Social Welfare, Mr Terry Comer, praised the calm actions of Mr Moore, who talked the excited beneficiary into putting the knife down on a table. Mr Moore had handled
the incident ‘‘courageously and effectively," said Mr Comer. He said that he would write a letter to Mr Moore commending him on his actions, and would also send a copy to the Commissioner of Social Welfare. Mr Comer said that the department’s interviewers had a difficult enough job without having to deal with weapon-carrying members of the public. Other staff members called the police while Mr Moore talked to the beneficiary. The man will appear in the District Court charged with possessing an offensive weapon.
