Old home for auction

The boyhood home of a well known Christchurch architect, Heathcote Helmore, will be sold. The property, in Rhodes Street, Merivale, will be auctioned on February 26 by Warwick Todd, Ltd. It has a Government valuation (1985) of $264,000. The Helmore family owned the property for 25 years. The house, which was built early this century, has three bedrooms, a small nursery, two family rooms, a large kitchen, a conservatory, and a lift, which was installed by a later owner. Mr Helmore, who died in 1965, aged 71, designed many buildings in the Christchurch area, including the Christchurch Golf Club in Shirley, the Lodge at Hanmer Springs, several features of the remodelled Canterbury Museum, and Church House of the Anglican diocese. He is best known for his house designs.
